TAMPA, Fla. – A dramatic morning crash involving a tractor-trailer brought traffic to a standstill and sent two people to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries on Saturday. The incident, which occurred at approximately 9:20 a.m., unfolded on the access road leading from US-301 to westbound I-4 and US-92.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 54-year-old Tampa man was driving a tractor-trailer westbound when he lost control of the vehicle. The truck swerved and collided with a median divider wall, causing it to overturn and burst into flames. The force of the impact propelled large chunks of concrete from the wall into the path of a second vehicle, a Ford sedan.
The sedan, driven by a 21-year-old man from Lake Mary, was unable to avoid the debris. The car struck the concrete, coming to a stop on the shoulder of the highway.
Emergency services quickly responded to the scene. The driver of the tractor-trailer was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment, while the driver of the sedan also sustained minor injuries.
The fiery crash and subsequent debris field caused significant delays for motorists in the area as crews worked to clear the wreckage and investigate the cause of the accident. The access road was closed for several hours, with traffic being rerouted to other thoroughfares. The incident is still under investigation.
