[09-02-23] Bicyclist Struck and Killed on W. Waters Ave in Tampa

TAMPA, Fla. – Tampa Police responded to an early morning traffic fatality in the 2100 block of W. Waters Avenue at 5:46 a.m. Thursday morning.

A bicyclist, a white male in his early 40s, was traveling on the sidewalk on the north side of the road when he veered into a traffic lane in the roadway.

The cyclist was struck by a white Nissan pickup truck that was traveling westbound, causing him to be knocked off his bicycle.

“Officers attempted to provide life-saving measures; however, the cyclist succumbed to the injuries he sustained because of the crash,” said Tampa PD.

The driver of the Nissan, an adult Hispanic male, remained on scene, cooperating with the investigation. There are no criminal charges or citations pending.

Traffic along W. Waters Avenue was closed to traffic for approximately 3 hours to allow for the investigation. All lanes of traffic have now been reopened.

CAR ACCIDENT STATISTICS

Car accidents happen all too often in the United States. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 39,345 people died in traffic crashes nationwide in 2024.

The busy roads of Tampa and Hillsborough County create many opportunities for serious car accidents. Major routes such as I-275, I-4, Dale Mabry Highway, Hillsborough Avenue, Kennedy Boulevard, and Fowler Avenue carry heavy traffic throughout the area.

Florida also continues to record hundreds of thousands of crashes each year. According to Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, there were 381,210 reportable traffic crashes in Florida in 2024, resulting in 3,184 deaths. Hillsborough County recorded 26,269 motor vehicle traffic crashes that year.

There are many different types of car accidents, including multi-vehicle collisions. When two or more vehicles are involved, determining fault can become more complicated. Several drivers and insurance policies may also be involved.

A variety of factors can cause these collisions. Distracted driving, speeding, impaired driving, reckless driving, unsafe lane changes, wrong-way driving, bad weather, and failure to obey traffic laws are common examples.
