[09-05-26] Riverview Man Arrested After Fleeing Serious-Injury Motorcycle Crash

A Riverview man was arrested after authorities say he fled the scene of a crash that left a motorcyclist seriously injured Thursday morning in Hillsborough County.

The crash occurred at approximately 10:30 a.m. on September 3, 2026, on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, east of Chastain Road.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a Ford Fusion driven by 45-year-old Bobby Mwaten of Riverview was traveling westbound on the north shoulder of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. At the same time, a Suzuki motorcycle operated by a 25-year-old Valrico woman was traveling westbound in the eastbound lane while legally passing vehicles on the left along the two-lane roadway.

Troopers say Mwaten attempted to make an improper U-turn from the shoulder and failed to observe and yield the right-of-way to the approaching motorcycle. The front of the Ford collided with the front of the motorcycle.

The motorcyclist suffered serious injuries and was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

Following the crash, FHP says Mwaten fled the scene and drove to 1368 East Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office deputies soon located and detained him.

Investigators say Mwaten had removed the Ford’s license plate and concealed it inside a backpack. Troopers also determined the vehicle was unregistered.

Mwaten was subsequently arrested by FHP troopers on charges of leaving the scene of a crash involving serious bodily injury, tampering with evidence, driving an unregistered motor vehicle and making an improper U-turn.

MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT STATISTICS

Florida is considered one of the most dangerous states for motorcycle riders. Motorcycle fatalities in Florida have more than doubled over the past twenty years. According to The National Highway Safety Administration, motorcycle riders continue to be overrepresented in fatal traffic crashes. In 2020 in the US, there were 5,458 motorcycle fatalities and 84,000 motorcycle accident-related injuries.

Some additional numbers and facts from Florida High Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) and Ride Smart Florida:

Motorcycles account for only 3% of registered motor vehicles but represent 17% of traffic crash deaths in Florida, with the state observing a total of 8,045 motorcycle crashes in 2020 and 8,614 crashes in the year 2021. That upwards trend is unfortunately present with the rate of motorcycle fatalities with Florida seeing 578 motorcycle fatalities in 2021 which is an increase from the 572 fatalities observed in 2020.

Several factors cause these collisions. The leading causes of motorcycle accidents are failure to yield and speeding. Here are a few other common dangerous driving behaviors that can lead to a collision with a motorcycle:

  • Left turns (made by vehicle operators)
  • Reckless driving
  • Distracted driving
  • Speeding
  • Driving while intoxicated
  • Driving in inclement weather
  • Wrong-way driving
  • Failing to obey traffic laws
  • Motorcycle lane splitting
